In celebration of October Filipino American History Month, Supervisor Chris Daly invites you to a reading & art exhibit showcasing the original artwork  from Lakas & The Makibaka Hotel, Illustration by  Carl Angel, Story by Tony Robles at the City Hall, Room 273. Lakas & the Makibaka Hotel (Makibaka means Struggle in Tagalog) is a story inspired by the struggle of the Trinity tenants to save their home against their landlord's plan to demolish their building on 8th & Market Street. Photos of Trinity tenants and their continuing struggle to safeguard their home & community will also be on display. Lakas & the Makibaka Hotel is the follow up story to the author's Lakas & the Manilatown Fish which was similarly inspired by the struggle of the tenants of the International Hotel. Author Tony Robles will read from the book.

RECLAIMING OUR HOME - 29th Anniversary of the International Hotel Eviction at the Manilatown Center in San Francisco. This year we have the NEW International Hotel and the Manilatown Center to hold our August 4th commemoration. Please join us for a night filled with "Struggle to rebuild the I Hotel" Exhibit Opening Performances by FEC Galing Bata and the Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble AND interactive activities including: airbrushing (bring your own item to be airbrushed or blank tshirts will be available), face painting, storybook writing and coloring and much much more. Tony Robles will be co-hosting the event.

Lakas and the Makibaka Hotel Book Release Party! Author and local favorite Anthony Robles will be storytelling with Bay Area artist Carl Angel. Kids can create their own Lakas collages, as they learn about the spirit of Makibaka—of struggle, hope, laughter, and song. Original illustrations from Lakas, as well as historic photos that inspired the artwork, will be on display as part of the "Kearny Street Memories" exhibit. With a special guest appearance by the Karaoke King himself and a book signing to follow, this family event should not be missed!
